What exactly is teeth grinding?

My wisdom teeth are coming in and I%26#039;ve been doing some research, and I keep coming across this %26quot;teeth grinding%26quot;..Is it literally teeth grinding or is it something else??? Thanks.

What exactly is teeth grinding?
Yeah it is literally the grinding of teeth. Sometimes people do it when they are nevous or angry...others do it in their sleep.
Reply:All four of my widom teeths are almost matured and yes, teeth grinding is the grinding of teeth, you may grind it without meaning to since they%26#039;re big.
Reply:Unfortunately, I am a teeth grinder. My whole life and it gets worse during times of stress or dreams. They have retainers that can be worn to help stop the problem but I can not sleep with plastic peices in my mouth. It is not worth it too me.

Grinding teeth can cause problems:

TMJ (jaw hinges wear and your jaw can pop out)

gum disease

loss of tooth enamel

movement of teeth

bad looking teeth

Teeth grinding is usually done while asleep. You grind the upper and lower teeth together just like rubbing two sticks together. The top parts of the teeth can get worn down. You can hear a grinder during the night. Stress makes it worse as a grinder is working out their problems while sleeping.

If you are grinding your teeth when the wisdom teeth are coming in it is because of the low grade pain. This pain you may not feel in the day when you are busy but at night your mind knows it is there and responds. The grinding can also relieve the pain.

Dont worry unless it is ongoing for 6 mos or more. I have spend 30,000 or more on my teeth over the years all out of my pocket. Some of it to correct problems from teeth grinding. And the TMJ shows up at times of stress and it is really scary. You could be talking or eating and your lower jaw drops down and locks up. You can not move your mouth. And then it pops back in and it is sore for days.

If this problems lasts consult your dentist.
